The Birth of an Idea: In March 2020, as India implemented a nationwide lockdown, concerns over personal protective equipment shortages grew. “The outbreak got us thinking about a quick fix solution. That’s when the idea of making face shields came up,” – Aman Modi, Co-founder of Tesseract, envisioned a rapid solution to address this pressing issue. Thus, the idea of producing face shields using FDM 3D printing technology was born—a testament to innovation in the face of adversity.

FDM 3D Printing to the Rescue: With unwavering determination, Tesseract’s team embarked on a mission to manufacture face shields using FDM 3D printing technology. Working tirelessly in shifts, they leveraged the capabilities of 70 3D printing machines to produce over 800 face shields daily. In just two months, Tesseract distributed 75,000+ face shields to frontline workers across various sectors, including healthcare, law enforcement, and sanitation.

Recognizing Innovation: Tesseract’s efforts garnered widespread recognition, with media outlets praising their innovative approach. Jyoti Shelar, editor at The Hindu, highlighted their contributions in an article titled ‘COVID-19: Youngsters step up to make face shields.’ Tesseract’s commitment to addressing critical supply shortages during the pandemic underscored the transformative potential of FDM 3D printing technology.

The Role of 3D Printing in Crisis Response: As the pandemic strained global supply chains, 3D printing emerged as a vital tool in combating shortages of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). From face shields to respirators, 3D printed components played a pivotal role in supporting frontline workers worldwide. In regions facing strict lockdowns and supply chain disruptions, 3D printing provided a lifeline, enabling the rapid production of customized replacement parts.

Moving Forward: Tesseract takes pride in contributing to the fight against COVID-19 and remains committed to providing innovative 3D printing solutions. As the world navigates through the new normal, Tesseract continues to offer its services to support those in need. Together, we will overcome any crisis and emerge stronger than ever before.
